Hi Reader,

One of the questions I’m occasionally asked about The Savvy Girl’s Guide to Thriving Beyond Narcissistic Abuse is why I chose to include a fictional story.

The answer is simple.

I wanted readers to recognize themselves without having to relive their own experiences.

In fact, writing that story was probably the hardest part of the entire book.

Writing about psychological and emotional abuse presents a unique challenge. Real stories can be deeply activating, and I wanted readers to understand how these relationships often begin without asking them to revisit some of the most painful moments of their own lives.

Every detail of that story was intentional.

I chose a short-term workplace relationship because there was already an uneven balance of power. My hope was to illustrate how boundaries can gradually become blurred, how intermittent reinforcement creates confusion, and how a relationship can begin to feel deeply intimate before genuine intimacy has actually been built.

Most of all, I wanted readers to understand one simple truth:

You are not to blame for finding yourself in a relationship like this.

Many unhealthy relationship patterns feel familiar long before we recognize them as unhealthy. That familiarity doesn’t mean you wanted to be hurt or that you should have known better. Often, it simply reflects what your nervous system had learned to recognize as familiar. And one of the things we know about the nervous system is that familiarity can easily be mistaken for safety—even when it isn’t.

If you’ve already read the book, I hope that story helped you feel seen with compassion rather than shame.

And if you’ve been thinking about reading it, I’m honored that Barnes & Noble selected it for their Fall Back into Reading promotion through October 28. Grab it now for only $3.99!

Thank you for allowing me to share a little of the heart behind the book.

With gratitude,

Corissa

Hi! I'm a Trauma Informed Coach, Sound Practitioner, Narcissistic Abuse Specialist™, Author and Podcast Host

I work with women who feel overwhelmed, disconnected from themselves, or caught in patterns they can't quite seem to change. Some are navigating the effects of unhealthy relationships or relational trauma. Others have spent years putting everyone else's needs ahead of their own. Through trauma-informed coaching, nervous system awareness, and body-based practices, I help women better understand their responses, explore the patterns beneath them, and develop a more trusting relationship with themselves. I also offer private sound healing experiences for women seeking space to rest and reconnect.
